SAFETY: THE NON-NEGOTIABLE
Your Protection, Our Promise.
Ibogaine is one of the most powerful therapeutic medicines available to modern medicine. It is also one that demands absolute respect. Administered without proper protocols, ibogaine carries serious cardiac risk. Administered with our protocols, it is extraordinarily safe, and extraordinarily effective.
Our safety infrastructure is not a selling point. It is a covenant.
WHY SAFETY PROTOCOLS MATTER
Understanding Ibogaine's Cardiac Profile
Ibogaine affects the heart’s electrical activity, specifically by prolonging the QT interval, a measurement of the cardiac cycle that, when disrupted, can trigger dangerous arrhythmias including ventricular tachycardia. This is the primary medical risk associated with ibogaine, and it is entirely manageable with proper pre-screening and continuous monitoring.
The majority of ibogaine-related adverse events documented in the literature occurred outside of medically supervised settings, in non-clinical environments without cardiac monitoring. The risk profile of properly supervised ibogaine treatment is categorically different.
Our protocols are designed to eliminate that risk, not minimize it, eliminate it.
PRE-TREATMENT SCREENING
Step One: Knowing You Before You Arrive
Safety begins long before you enter our facility. Every prospective patient completes a comprehensive medical evaluation designed to identify any contraindications, optimize physiological conditions, and ensure your protocol is calibrated precisely to your body.
Cardiac Evaluation

Comprehensive pre-treatment screening
12-Lead EKG: Baseline measurement of cardiac electrical activity, specifically evaluating QT interval and identifying any pre-existing arrhythmias or conduction abnormalities.

Echocardiogram
Cardiac ultrasound providing structural assessment of the heart, valvular function, chamber dimensions, ejection fraction. Any structural abnormality is evaluated against ibogaine safety criteria.

Cardiovascular History Review
Thorough assessment of personal and family cardiac history to identify any baseline risks not captured by testing alone.
Blood Work & Laboratory Testing

Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Evaluation of overall blood health and capacity.

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
Liver and kidney function, electrolyte levels, blood glucose, all critical parameters for safe ibogaine administration.

Thyroid Function
Thyroid status affects both cardiac rhythm and ibogaine metabolism.

Liver Enzymes (LFTs)
Ibogaine is metabolized hepatically; liver function must be adequate for safe clearance.
Medication Review
Every medication, supplement, and substance is reviewed by our clinical team. Ibogaine has significant interactions with medications affecting serotonin levels, cardiac rhythm, and liver enzyme activity. Our team provides specific guidance on tapering and discontinuation timelines for each patient, typically beginning 2–4 weeks before arrival.
Absolute contraindications, conditions that preclude ibogaine treatment regardless of other factors, are identified at this stage. We do not proceed with treatment for any patient whose safety we cannot ensure.
DURING TREATMENT
Continuous Monitoring Throughout the Experience
Cardiac Monitoring

Continuous EKG
Real-time cardiac telemetry tracking your heart rhythm every second of treatment. Not periodic checks, constant surveillance with automated alarms for any concerning changes.

Pulse Oximetry
Continuous blood oxygen saturation monitoring.

Blood Pressure Monitoring
Regular vital sign assessment throughout the experience.
Electrolyte Optimization
Electrolyte imbalances, particularly low magnesium, potassium, and calcium, increase QT prolongation risk. Every patient receives IV electrolyte supplementation 24–48 hours before treatment to optimize levels that protect against cardiac complications. Repeated testing confirms your body is prepared before ibogaine is administered.
Emergency Preparedness
We prepare for emergencies that may never occur, because preparation is what makes response measured in seconds rather than minutes.

Defibrillator (AED)
Present and accessible throughout every treatment session.

Emergency medications
Full cardiac emergency medication kit, including antiarrhythmics and resuscitation medications.

IV access
Maintained throughout treatment for immediate medication delivery if required.

Oxygen and airway management
Full respiratory emergency equipment on-site.

Rehearsed response protocols
Our team has rehearsed emergency response for every possible scenario. If something occurs, the response is immediate and coordinated.
ABSOLUTE CONTRAINDICATIONS
Who Should Not Receive Ibogaine
Ibogaine treatment is not appropriate for everyone. The following conditions are absolute contraindications, meaning treatment cannot proceed regardless of the patient’s wishes or the strength of therapeutic motivation:
Significant cardiac arrhythmia or conduction abnormality (prolonged QTc, bundle branch block, Brugada syndrome, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome)
Active psychosis or a diagnosed psychotic disorder (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder)
Severe liver disease or hepatic insufficiency
Certain medication classes that cannot be safely discontinued (consult our clinical team for specifics)
Severe uncorrected hypertension
Cerebellar ataxia
Pregnancy or active breastfeeding
OUR MEDICAL TEAM
The People Behind the Protocols
DR. Omar A. Calderon, MD ,
Daisy Silva
Daisy leads clinical operations and integration programming, bridging the medical and psychological dimensions of treatment. Her role ensures that the safety infrastructure and the therapeutic experience are fully integrated, that what happens clinically serves the healing process.
Luisa Cab, RN,
Luisa provides nursing leadership and continuity of care across every patient’s stay. Her presence from arrival through departure creates a thread of clinical attention that does not depend on any single handoff or shift change.
Ray Rodriguez
Ray brings lived experience and professional training to the integration dimension of care. He works with patients before, during, and after treatment to ensure the psychological experience is supported, contextualized, and productively integrated into lasting change.
POST-TREATMENT SAFETY
The Recovery Window
The ibogaine experience is physically demanding. Immediately following treatment, patients typically experience fatigue, mild ataxia (coordination changes), and sensory sensitivity. This is normal and expected, it is the body recalibrating after a significant neurological event.
All patients remain at our facility for a monitored recovery period before any travel. We do not discharge patients before clinical criteria for safe return are met. This isn’t an arbitrary policy, it’s a safety requirement.
POST-TREATMENT MONITORING INCLUDES:

Continued cardiac monitoring following treatment completion

Medical assessment before discharge clearance

Gradual reintroduction of approved medications under clinical supervision

Nutritional support and hydration management

Integration session initiation before departure
PRIVACY & SECURITY
Your Protection Extends Beyond the Medical
Your safety isn’t only physical. Your privacy, security, and dignity are equally non-negotiable.
Facility confidentiality
Our treatment center location remains confidential to protect all patients. The address is shared only upon confirmed enrollment.
Private transportation
Private drivers escort you to and from our facility. You are never navigating an unfamiliar environment alone.
Medical record privacy
Your records are handled with the highest clinical confidentiality standards.

OUR COMMITMENT
Safety as Sacred Duty
We chose this phrase deliberately. In the Bwiti tradition from which iboga originates, the medicine is approached with reverence and protocol, never casually, never carelessly. We honor that tradition by bringing the same reverence to the medical dimension.
Safety isn’t a value we balance against effectiveness. It is the prerequisite of effectiveness. A patient who is safe can surrender to healing. A patient who is uncertain cannot.
TO CLIENTS
You will be protected with the precision your life deserves.
TO FAMILIES
Your loved one will be guarded as fiercely as if they were our own.
When you choose The Iboga Wellness Institute, you’re choosing a team that understands what’s actually at stake, not just a successful treatment, but a life reclaimed, a family restored, a future rewritten.
